Art Historian, scholar of the modern and contemporary Georgian art. In 1944-1949 she studied at the Tbilisi State University, Faculty of History and in 1952-1954 took post-graduate study course at the Institute of History of Georgian Art. In 1950-1951 she worked at the Monuments Protection Department, in 1956 she started to work at the Institute of History of Georgian Art, where she headed Department of Modern and Contemporary Art (since 1984). She lectured at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts.
M. Karbelashvili is the author of monographs, albums, books dedicated to the Georgian painters. She took part in the international symposia on Georgian art (1977, 1981, 1989).
