Natela Aladashvili

(1923, Tbilisi – 2006, Tbilisi)  Art Historian, Prof. Dr. (1980), Professor (1983). She graduated from the Tbilisi State University, Department of History (1944) and took post-graduate training at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art (1946-1949). In 1950 she started to work in the same Institute, and from 1987 she was a Leading Researcher. From 1968 she lectured at the Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts.   Subject of her research work was medieval Georgian sculpture and its connection with the Byzantine, Armenian and Western European sculpture; identification of the general trends and stages of development of the Georgian monumental sculpture; medieval Georgian mural painting (in particular, the monuments of Svaneti); modern Georgian fine art.  N. Aladashvili took part in the international symposia dedicated to Georgian art, interrelation of the Georgian and Byzantine art; she was participant of the International Congress of Byzantinists.

Gaiane Alibegashvili

(1922, vill. Stepantsminda – 1997, Tbilisi)  Art Historian, Prof. Dr. (1975; 1976), Honoured Scientist of Georgia (1987). In 1944 she graduated from the Tbilisi State University, Faculty of Languages and Literature and in 1948 she finished her post-graduate studies at the Institute of History of Georgian Art. She started to work at the same Institute in 1949 and since 1985 was the Head of the Medieval Fine Arts Department. Since 1968 she lectured at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts.  G. Alibegashvili studied medieval Georgian mural and icon painting, book illumination, medieval Georgian sculpture and contemporary Georgian fine arts. Of utmost significance are her monographs on the medieval Georgian secular portraiture, book illumination, painting school of Svaneti, Georgian scenography. She participated in the international symposia on Georgian art and symposia on relations of the Georgian and Byzantine art, in international congresses of Byzantinists.

Jilda Iosebidze

(1938, Tbilisi – 1985, Tbilisi)  Art Historian, Ph.D., researcher of medieval Georgian mural and icon painting, heritage preservation and conservation expert, greatly concerned with the development of the field.  Having graduated from the Tbilisi State University she started to work at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art under the supervision of T. Virsaladze (1943-1985).  Medieval Georgian mural painting was the major research field of the scholar. J. Iosebidze made a  considerable contribution to the study of the Georgian Christian art and mural painting in particular. Her works are notable for the deep comprehension of theological content, which is read in the artistic form of the work of art.  Jilda Iosebidze had also contributed to development of the heritage preservation and museum activities. In 1978-1985 she collaborated with the Main Board for the Protection of Monuments and State Museum of Fine Arts.  Jilda Iosebidze actively participated in education of Georgian conservation painters. Together with E. Privalova she initiated training of the young Georgian restorers and art historians by the well-known Russian conservation painter Adolf Ovchinnikov, introduced the tradition of making copy-reconstructions based on the scholarly research, intensive use of the results of mural and icon-painting technical investigation in art historical studies, collaboration with chemists, biologists and the experts of different fields.

Nodar Janberidze

(1927, Tbilisi – 1997, Tbilisi )  Historian of Architecture and Art Critic. In 1948 he graduated from the Georgian Polytechnical Institute, department of Architecture. In 1949-1985 he worked at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art and in 1986-1996 he was Director of the same Institute; in 1961-1985 he lectured at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts; in 1974-1981 he was Chairman of the Artists Union of Georgia; Prof. Dr., Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of USSR Academy of Arts, Honoured Art Worker, Laureate of the State Prize of Georgia.   N. Karlo Kacharava

(1964, Samtredia – 1994, Tbilisi )  Art Historian,  Art Critic, Painter, Poet. In 1981 – 1986 he studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, Faculty of Art History and Theory. His research interests dealt with Modern and Contemporary Art (20th c.). Since 1989 he was member of the editorial board of the journal “ Literatura da khelovneba”. Since 1990 he was the Board Member of Art Critics Association. In 1991 he worked at Fransuaza Fridrichs gallery in Germany. In 1987-1994 he worked at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art as a researcher. In 1997 he was awarded G. Chubinashvili State Prize for the contribution to the history of art.  Karlo Kacharava is a significant figure in the 1980 –1990s history of Georgian culture. He was a person of vast erudition and distinguished by the wide range of talents – a writer, poet, critic, painter, graphic artist, art historian, historian, essayist . . . He left an indelible imprint on these fields.  As an art historian he left remarkable works about the 20th c. Avant-guard, history of Georgian Avant-guard and individual artists (V. Sidamon-Eristavi, Iliazdi, P. Blyotkin, G. Bugadze, L. Chogoshvili and other Georgian artists of 1980-1990s). He analysed and sharply critisized current cultural, social and historical processes of 1980-90s in Georgia.

Mary Karbelashvili

(1931, Tbilisi – 2006, Tbilisi)  Art Historian, scholar of the modern and contemporary Georgian art. In 1944-1949 she studied at the Tbilisi State University, Faculty of History and in 1952-1954 took post-graduate study course at the Institute of History of Georgian Art. In 1950-1951 she worked at the Monuments Protection Department, in 1956 she started to work at the Institute of History of Georgian Art, where she headed Department of Modern and Contemporary Art (since 1984). She lectured at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts.  M. Karbelashvili is the author of monographs, albums, books dedicated to the Georgian painters. She took part in the international symposia on Georgian art (1977, 1981, 1989).

Catherine Privalova

(1930, Tbilisi - 1998, Tbilisi)  Art  Historian, Prof. Dr., graduated from the Tbilisi State University, Faculty of History and afterwards took postgraduate training at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art.  Since 1958 she worked at the same Institute as a researcher. Since 1963 she was a member of Georgian Artists’ Union. In  1967-1973 she lectured at Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts,  Faculty of Art History. Since 1978 she worked at the Main Board for Protection of Monuments of History and Culture of Georgia as a Senior Researcher and Head of the Department.  In  1992-1993 she was a Member of Directorate of  Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts and  since 1996 – Director of the “Betania” Centre for Scientific Research of Painting.  E. Privalova participated in the I (Bergamo, Italy, 1974), III (Bari-Leche, Italy, 1980) and IV (Tbilisi, Georgia, 1983) International Symposia on Georgian Art, as well as in the Conference on Greek and Georgian Art (Patmos, Greece, 1981), Conference dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the Studenica Monastery (Belgrade, Jugoslavia, 1986), also in the seminar – “Byzantium and Georgia” (Athens, Greece, 1990) and in the International Symposium – “Mount Athos Art of the Byzantine Period” (Thessaloniki, Greece, 1997).  E. Privalova was an honorary  member of ICOMOS Georgian National Committee, IOFA and Greek Christian Archaeology Society, a Chief Consultant for the International Art Centre Program “Save Kintsvisi Frescoes” and an active member of all the programmes dedicated to the restoration and conservation of the medieval Georgian monuments. She was a co-author of the scientific-popular documentaries as well.

Leonid Shervashidze

 (1910, Paris – 2003, Tbilisi)  Prof. Dr., Professor of ethics and aesthetics, member of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazeti, Honoured Artist of Abkhazeti (1961) and Georgia (1983).  His research field covered Antique and medieval fine arts – book illumination and mural painting. In 1945 he had graduated from the Tbilisi Rail Transport Institute. In 1948-1951 he took his post graduate studies at the Institute of History of Georgian Art, where he continued to work from 1951. He was also staff member of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History of Abkhazeti and headed the Department of Archaeology, Ethnography, Anthropology and Art. He was a member of the Artists Union of Georgia since 1963 and participated in various exhibitions from 1932.   L. Shervashidze’s works are kept in the Janashia State Museum of Georgia (Georgian National Museum) and D. Gunia Museum of Sokhumi. For decades he studied remains of old cities – Dioscuria and Sebastopolis. In his youth, his activity was linked with the underwater archaeology; he took active part in the underwater works.  L. Shervashidze as a scholar could never stay within strict limits. Apart from the medieval art, he also studied contemporary painting, graphic art, sculpture – both Georgian and Abkhazian. He was a painter himself, author of the graphic works and illustrator of books. For decades L. Shervashidze spared no efforts to reconstruct coats of arms of the Georgian and Abkhazian nobility. He had also compiled genealogy of the Sharvashidze family.

Parmen Zakaraia

(1916, Najikhavo – 2003, Tbilisi )  Art Historian, Archaeologist, Prof. Dr. In 1940 he graduated from the Georgian Polytechnical Institute, Faculty of Architecture. In 1941-1947 he took post graduate training at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art and worked at the same Institute as a researcher. In 1948-2003 he was the staff member of the S. Janashia Museum of Georgia, Professor of Georgian Polytechnical Institute and Tbilisi State University (1975 – 2003; in 1975-2001 – Head of the department of Art History and Theory); he was Corresponding Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, Laureate of the following Prizes: “Scientific Prize” of the Tbilisi State University (1991), Ivane Javakhishvili Prize (1993), “Prize for the Best Book of the Year” (2002), Honoured Scientist of Georgia.    Together with the other Georgian architectural buildings (fortresses, palaces) P. Zakaraia has studied and published a considerable number of churches (Tsaishi, Tsugrugasheni, Ananuri, Largvisi and many others). Study of the ecclesiastical architecture was given an important place during the work of archaeological expeditions headed by him (excavations of the Urbnisi city-site – 1953-1965; of the Gremi city-site – 1963-1967; of Nokalakevi – 1973-2003). As a result, Urbnisi cathedral, churches of Gremi and Nokalakevi were published. Under the supervision and with the participation of P. Zakaraia, these monuments were measured and restored. P. Zakaraia is the author of such generalized works as three-volume book on the 10th-18th cc. Georgian domed churches and a vast book on the Tao-Klarjeti churches in Russian. He is the co-author of the textbook of the History of Georgian Architecture.
